Following on from the EYFS, children continue to have a targeted diet of phonic teaching and learning as well as being exposed to rich and challenging texts which are often above the independent reading level of the class.  The teacher and pupils access large and visually accessible texts which the children can interact with and discuss words and other reading objectives together. For independent reading, the children are supported through the use of banded reading books which reflect a range of schemes such as Oxford reading Tree, Rising Stars and Big Cat(based on the Cliff Moon structure) which the children progress though as their reading level improves until they are ready to be ‘free’ readers, which at our school happens after they reach white level.  Like their EYFS peers, they also are actively encouraged to select from a wide class library to ensure that they continue to practise the skill of self-selection and have the opportunity to maintain access to a wide range of good quality texts.
