Once the children reach KS2, they are mostly on free choice readers to sustain their independent reading skills. We have a wide selection of books in each of the class libraries, which we strive to update as often as we are able to. If, however, they are not quite ready for a freer choice, they continue on the banded readers. We are building our selection of age appropriate banded readers so that these older children have a different selection from that they have experienced in KS1.
Most of the reading teaching and learning is achieved through whole class and group sessions where careful thought is put into the choice of text they are exposed to, ensuring that they have opportunities to become immersed in good quality, language rich books and extracts. Though we undoubtedly prepare the children for the end of Key Stage tests, our greater focus is on developing children’s love of the written word, exposure to a wider vocabulary, provision of opportunities to discuss texts, making links and connections, being exposed to different ideas and cultures and importantly using their reading experiences to gain a greater understanding of the world.
