music AT MAYFIELD CE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Intent |
At Mayfield CE Primary School, our central purpose of music education is to provide all our pupils with opportunities to make more music, think more musically and consequently become more musical. Through our core Christian Values of compassion, respect, responsibility and perseverance we believe that all children can be successful, creative and curious learners. Our Music Curriculum meets the aims of the National Curriculum across the 4 main strands of singing, musicianship (including performing), listening and composing. Our pupils will experience the enjoyment of communicating through a universal language, which transcends different, cultures, abilities and generations. Through music, the children will have the chance to express themselves and make personal connections. They are encouraged to use their individual interests when responding to and composing music and to take pride in their achievements. We support the children to develop their social skills through co-operation with others and help them to develop positive attitudes, experiencing success and satisfaction in music. We foster in the children a sense of belonging to the school, as well providing them with opportunities to connect with people and places in their local community and the wider world. |
Implementation |
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression, which is under-pinned by our Christian values. Our music curriculum closely follows the guidelines set out in the Model Music Curriculum, a practical framework that ensures continuity of music skills and knowledge, appropriately sequenced as the children move through the school. The Model Curriculum is supported by an on-line practical tool-kit ‘Charanga’ which provides extensive listening opportunities, embeds specific musical vocabulary and allows the children use their musical knowledge to express themselves in the powerful and unique form of communication that is music. The music learning of the children is maximised through a cross-curricular approach linking as closely as possible to the term’s Learning Journey. Children develop an understanding of the history of music, different musical traditions and the music of a variety of cultures. They are given the opportunities to compose music and express their ideas and feelings. We provide an array of performance opportunities both in school and within the local community and encourage high standards of musical performance both vocally and with instruments. We support the children to be motivated to enjoy and succeed in the shared experience of making music. |
Impact |
At Mayfield CE Primary School, our children will develop an appreciation of the richness of our musical heritage and the understanding of a wide of musical styles from a variety of cultures. Through the understanding and enjoyment of music making, they will achieve highly, having acquired a valuable set of skills and knowledge that can be applied to the next stage of their education, which ultimately provides fulfilment throughout life. We will regularly review, reflect and evaluate our music curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of all the children in our school. |
