MAYFIELD C E PRIMARY CURRICULUM vISION

Intent

Our Curriculum has been designed with our core Christian values at its heart: respect, compassion, responsibility and perseverance. We aim to nurture and inspire all of our children so that they are ‘given wings to soar’.

It meets the aims of the National Curriculum through ensuring that learning opportunities are coherently planned and sequenced to give all pupils the knowledge and skills they need to transition successfully to the next stage of their education.  It also establishes firm foundations for pupils to confidently make a positive contribution to society.

Our Curriculum is ambitious and tailored specifically to the needs of all pupils at Mayfield CE Primary School by:

  • Knowing our children well and being responsive to their interests and aspirations.
  • Providing effective challenge and support to ensure our children achieve highly.
  • Encouraging our children to believe in themselves, take pride in their achievements and develop their resilience to challenges.
  • Supporting our children to respect difference in the world and its people, celebrating the things we share in common across cultural, religious, ethnic and socio-economic communities.
  • Inspiring our children to appreciate and learn how to care for their environment and God’s creation.
  • Fostering a sense of belonging to the school, their local community and the wider world.

Implementation

Pupils at Mayfield CE Primary School study the full national curriculum: a broad range of subjects are taught.  They also take part in a range of experiences designed to enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Each term children explore a carefully planned Learning Journey that has been designed to help them make meaningful links between subjects.  Over time, this helps our children to make connections in their learning and practise applying their knowledge and skills fluently.

Every Learning Journey poses a ‘big’ question.  This is designed to support children to explore different viewpoints and learn to debate in a respectful manner as well as generate their own questions.

In order to help our children care for the environment, we have weaved a thread of opportunity to understand current issues such as: litter, water pollution, deforestation, melting ice caps and desertification as well as thinking about what they can do to make a difference.

To help our children learn about the world and its people, our Learning Journeys lead them to explore the local environment and each of the world’s continents as well as travelling through different historical periods, where comparisons can be made.

Through high quality teaching of knowledge, skills and specific vocabulary, all children are challenged to be inquisitive, creative and reflective learners.  They will have opportunities to shape their own learning, develop positive learning behaviours and have high expectations of themselves.

Impact

Our children will achieve highly having acquired a valuable set of skills, knowledge and Christian values that can be applied both in the next stage of their education and life ahead.  They will respect themselves, others and the world in which they live in order to make a positive contribution to society.  In God’s love, they will flourish and have the freedom of ‘wings to soar’.

We will regularly review and evaluate our curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of all children who attend Mayfield CE Primary School.
